Night Vision

Night vision is simply ability to see in the dark. This ability is achieved through various technologies. The human eye is not capable of unassisted night vision due to its very narrow spectral range of sensitivity to light photons. Most night vision devices use an instrument called an Image Intensifier or Gain Multiplication CCD, which convert existing photons into the spectrum range that is visible to the human eye. Since night vision devices are capable of converting infrared (invisible spectrum) waves into images, many utilize infrared (IR) flashlights or IR emitters. Essentially, these work identically to traditional flashlights, only they emit the infrared light wave, which increases the amount of the waves reflecting from the object of observation. Equipment that use additional infrared sources are typically called “active night vision” devices. These are common in civilian, industrial, commercial, hunting, search and rescue and surveillance applications. However, since IR can be seen with other night vision devices, military and law enforcement agencies are very selective in their use of active night vision goggles, monoculars and riflescopes.
