Millett

Millett Riflescopes and Millet Red dot sights have been around since the late 1990's, but very few people in the industry know the history of this interesting brand. Millett, currently owned by Bushnell Outdoor Products group, was originally started by Ray Millett, who was the engineer at Cox model Airplane company, when he purchased surplus cleaning equipment from a company that went out of business in California. Like many American entrepreneurs, Ray Millett saw an opportunity for making metal injection molding process work various industries and the company began to grow.

In the late 1970's, Ray was joined by his son Tom, who brought the passion of firearms and shooting into the business and gave it a new direction. Millett Industries started their foray into the hunting and outdoor industry by making pistol sights and mounting systems which soon found popularity with the dealers and consumers alike. In the late 1990's, Tom saw the new opportunity for his company and began manufacturing and importing red dot sights from Japan (this is an interesting parallel with the history of Bushnell here). Following, the introduction of red dot sights, Tom Millett went to China and set up production of riflescopes there. Not willing to compromise on quality, Tom recruited his brother Jim to develop a sophisticated computer system to test performance and reliability of its products through simulation of the firing conditions of a 30-06 rifle. This along with several other innovation really put the company on par with many other successful American brands of the late 90's.
